Dust - power tools

Before work starts, ways of stopping or reducing the amount of dust the task might make must be looked at. Use of different materials, less powerful tools or other work methods must be considered.

On tool extraction systems must be used - these include the tool, captor/extraction hoods, minimum M class extraction units and hoses/connections. Domestic type hoovers, such as Henry, must not be used for this purpose.

Extraction units must clearly indicate their filter class.

All equipment is to be used and regularly maintained in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions including use of the correct internal dust bags.

The use of dust bags attached directly to a tool is not permitted.

In addition to using on tool extraction, RPE must also be worn.

All RPE used on Lovell projects must be CE marked and have an Assigned Protection Factor (APF) of 20 (FFP3 or P3).

RPE must be:
• Suitable for the work disposable tight fitting RPE (masks or half masks) may become uncomfortable for extended periods; powered RPE can help alleviate this discomfort, especially when individuals work for more than an hour without a break;
• Compatible with other protective equipment;
• Used and maintained in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions.
• Worn correctly to ensure a specific make, model, and size of tightfitting RPE can achieve a good fit to an individual, a fit test needs to be conducted by a competent person and the wearer must have no facial hair in the region of the face seal as this can prevent RPE from forming a good seal allowing contaminants to be inhaled by the wearer.
• Facial hair includes stubble, beard, moustache, and sideburns.
• Individuals with facial hair that may compromise the seal should use a loose fitting powered respirator or should be tasked alternative work arrangements that avoid exposure to construction dust.
• Records of face fit tests must be available upon request.

RPE is the final line of protection and should not be solely relied upon as the primary means of protection.
