Portable fire extinguishers
Fire extinguishers are for tackling emerging fires or aiding escape. Larger fires must be handled by the fire and rescue service, which should be called immediately.
Provide an adequate number of 13A rated extinguishers based on the fire risk assessment.
P50 service free extinguishers complying with BS EN 37 are allowed but must be visually inspected annually and included in weekly checks.
Alternatives to powder extinguishers are recommended for exit routes due to visibility and respiratory issues.
Extinguishers must be easily visible, mounted on brackets or stands, and regularly maintained.
Weekly checks must ensure extinguishers are in place, undamaged, unobstructed, and have clear operating instructions.
All firefighting equipment must be serviced annually by a qualified person.
Workers must be competent in using the equipment, and its adequacy should be reviewed as work progresses.
Mobile plant should carry appropriate extinguishers where practicable.
