Site storage of flammable liquids and LPG

Flammable liquids and LPG cylinders must be stored in open, securely fenced compounds, shaded from the sun and away from pits, drains, and low lying areas.

Liquid fuel stores must have an imperforate bund to contain the largest drum’s contents plus 10%.

Flammable liquids and LPG should not be stored together. If stored differently, only a day’s supply should be kept in fire resistant containers.

Storage areas must be as far as possible from buildings, ideally 20m away for high risk projects. Containers should not be stored within 10m of buildings or boundaries unless the boundary is a fire resistant wall.

Warning signs must be displayed at store entrances.

Floors must be paved or compacted, and the area kept clear of combustible materials.

All workers must be trained to operate and shut down storage tanks and handling facilities. Portable fire extinguishers must be provided based on the fire risk assessment.

Where practicable, store containers at the lowest accessible point, supported by flame retardant pallets to minimise fire spread.
