Material delivery
Before delivery, notify the supplier or haulier of any restrictions on vehicle type, delivery hours, access routes, or access points using our Delivering Safely Information (available via Form Builder on Project Plus).
When abnormal loads are necessary for our projects, conduct thorough checks with all relevant parties (i.e., subcontractor, plant company, haulier etc.) to confirm the relevant authorities have been informed.
Obtain a copy of any granted movement order for our records before the movement of abnormal loads. Refer to the Transporting abnormal loads website for additional information, guidance, and an online application form.
An ‘abnormal load’ is defined as a vehicle that has any of the following:
• a weight of more than 44,000kg
• an axle load of more than 10,000kg for a single non-driving axle and 11,500kg for a single driving axle
• a width of more than 2.9 metres
• a rigid length of more than 18.65 metres
This may include piling rigs, large excavators, mobile cranes, cabins, tower crane units, prefabricated concrete sections, large steel sections, large roof trusses, attenuation tanks and so on.
Upon arrival, identify a safe parking area for the delivery vehicle and ensure a nominated person is responsible for monitoring the delivery.
Provide the driver with site-specific rules, ensuring adherence to all prevailing rules, including PPE requirements.
If necessary, assign a responsible person to assist with reversing, and request evidence of the driver's training or competence for lifting operations, such as RTITB, ALLMI, or CPCS certification.
During delivery, provide a safe, recognised route around the site that minimises reversing, and designate clearly identified, obstruction-free, and well-lit off-loading areas on firm, level ground suitable for lifting operations and stable stacking.
Ensure the driver has a safe refuge, such as the vehicle cab, allowing full visibility.
Drivers accessing the trailer bed must follow their employer’s safe systems of working for fall prevention.
Any issues, injuries, or learning events during the delivery should be reported to the supplier or haulier.
Refer to our Managing Deliveries on Construction Sites risk assessment for further controls.
