Mortar silos
Mortar silos must be positioned to allow a robust wheel stop to be provided to prevent contact between operatives at the silo and machinery collecting mortar tubs.
The wheel stop should be constructed 3.5m to 4m in front of the silo, be between 350mm and 500mm high, and built to withstand daily use. If constructed from blocks, they should be laid flat.
The rear and sides of the silo area must be enclosed with suitable fencing, such as post and rail, ensuring at least two pedestrian openings on opposing or adjacent sides for safe access.
Pedestrians must not enter the silo area from the vehicle approach zone.
A drainage channel must be installed to direct washout or spills to a catchment pit, preventing ground and water pollution and reducing slip and trip hazards.
The electrical supply for the silo must be installed, inspected, and tested by a competent electrician, with testing conducted at least every three months.
The silo position should be carefully planned in the project PAVES and logistics plan, ensuring ease of access for refilling vehicles.
The silo area must be located at least 10m from surface drains and watercourses whenever possible. If this distance cannot be maintained, additional measures must be implemented to control runoff adequately.
The silo area must be kept clean and tidy and free of obstacles.
