PAVES - Pedestrians

Separate entry and exit points must be provided for pedestrians and vehicles and kept closed when not in use.

Pedestrian walkways must 900mm wide whenever possible, and be firm, level, and follow the most direct route possible.

Walkways must be firm and level and constructed from fully compacted MOT Type 1 as a minimum, with tarmac considered for longer-term use.

Walkways should be raised above ground level to prevent water pooling.

Designated crossing points must be provided where walkways cross roads, clearly signed so drivers and pedestrians can see each other.

Crossing points must be positioned opposite each other whenever possible.

Pedestrians must establish eye contact and receive a ‘thumbs up’ from vehicle operators before crossing.

Walkways must remain clear of materials to prevent pedestrians from stepping into vehicle routes.

Physical barriers must be provided between pedestrians and vehicle routes, maintained, and adjusted to suit work progression. Barrier tape is not an acceptable substitute.

Directional signage is to be displayed to help workers navigate the site and avoid unofficial shortcuts across vehicle routes.

Designated routes must be followed by all on site.

A PAVES plan must be implemented, updated as necessary, and communicated to all site personnel.

Induction training should ensure all drivers and pedestrians understand the routes and traffic rules.
