PPE
Unless direct otherwise by Lovell site management, the minimum requirements for PPE on all projects are;
• Head protection manufactured to BS EN 397 in white. Subcontractor supervisors should wear a black hat.
• Safety footwear compliant with EN ISO 20345. Must have protective toecap and midsole (S3)
• Task suitable (mechanical or chemical hazard) protective gloves conforming to BS EN 388. Minimum cut resistance 3 or level C when undertaking general manual works
• Upper body high visibility (hi vis) clothing Class 2 minimum and conform to BS EN 20471 in yellow
All other PPE as determined by specific task risk assessment must also be worn.
Workers are to wear PPE correctly as instructed and in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.
PPE must be provided free of charge to Lovell employees.
PPE must be maintained in good condition and stored safely and kept clean when not in use. PPE must not be modified in any way and must be replaced when necessary to ensure optimal protection.
Practising members of the Sikh faith are exempt from wearing a safety helmet whilst wearing a turban. No other workers are covered by this exemption. Sikhs who are not wearing turbans are not exempt from this ruling.
The practice of wearing them back to front will not be tolerated. Employees must also be discouraged from marking or decorating the plastic of the helmet, other than for applying official stickers or confirmation of site induction.
Bump caps are not permitted for construction work as these may protect the wearer from minor head bumps and lacerations but not from falling or flying objects.
Gloves may only be omitted if a specific risk assessment determines that wearing them would create or increase risk for certain tasks, such as operating rotating or moving machinery or using serrated blades. In such cases, robust alternative controls must be implemented to ensure adequate protection for hands and fingers, such as guarding. The risk assessment is to be reviewed in accordance with our RAMS review process.
Exceptions to glove wearing include Sales staff based in marketing suites, potential purchasers or members of the public who are escorted whilst in our charge.
Other colours of high vis clothing that allow the wearer to stand out against ambient background or for instant identification may be used as required/determined by risk assessment. The risk assessment is to be reviewed in accordance with our RAMS review process.
In accordance with Construction dusts, appropriate RPE must be worn. All RPE used on Lovell projects must have an assigned protection factor (APF) of 20 which equates to (FF)P3 classification. A JSP Force 8 half mask ‘press to check’ P3 is the minimum standard for Lovell direct and agency employees.
Wearers of close fitting RPE must be face fit tested to the RPE being worn, be clean shaven and have face fit records available on request. Air fed hoods should be used for those facial hair.
