Scaffold - general
Scaffolding of all types is to be erected, adapted and dismantled in accordance with our National Scaffold specification.
Scaffolders must hold CISRS cards in accordance with our National Scaffold specification.
Bandstands must be fully boarded and fitted with a proprietary stability and integral edge protection system incorporating a handrail, brickguards, toe board and ladder access.
Boards/stagings are to be supported at the manufacturers’ recommended centres.
Works are to be programmed to permit tasks such as painting, mastic sealants, cleaning and removal of protective material to be completed prior to the dismantling of scaffolds/working platforms where possible.
Birdcage scaffolding/internal fall prevention platforms are to be installed to suit the appropriate build stage.
Scaffolding or any working platform must not be used until it has been handed over to Lovell site management following an initial inspection.
Gaps in scaffold platforms must be covered if there is a risk of items falling through and causing harm to persons below.
Emergency access and egress arrangements should be considered when selecting appropriate access systems.
Stair access systems must be the primary means of access for plots of two storeys or more, with ladders reserved for secondary emergency access only.
Where ladders are used, they must be fitted at right angles to the platform with rung heights aligned with working platforms of the main scaffold as closely as possible and have self-closing ladder gates provided.
Internal ladders must have a trapdoor installed.
Debris netting or similar must be installed to areas of scaffold adjacent to site boundaries, public spaces, roads, footpaths, and any areas accessed by the public.
This is to be incorporated within design or when creating a TG20 compliance sheet.
If scaffolding is intended as part of the means of escape, any scaffold sheeting used must be flame-retardant adhering to requirements stated in either LPS 1215 or TS 62 for fire performance. The relevant approval mark must be printed on the material.
To minimise smoke in the escape route and make fire and rescue service access easier, do not use sheeting to enclose scaffold stair towers or escape ladders.
Scaffolding is subject to daily visual checks and must be formally inspected weekly by a competent person, or more frequently if required, with records entered into a scaffold register.
Scaffold handover certificates must be filed, and records maintained.
Loading bays must not have any brickguards used as material containment. Gates must be fully meshed with 2 guardrails to protect the open edge when in the open position, and the cheeks must either be ranch style boarding or a proprietary panel.
