Site security
Erect a continuous perimeter fence or hoarding at least 2m high upon site possession, maintaining it until project completion.
Secure fencing robustly, avoiding easily cut materials like rope or plastic zip ties.
Open metal mesh fencing must have a close mesh to prevent children from gaining handholds or footholds and each panel must be double clipped with bolts facing inwards.
Conduct a security risk assessment for high-risk or urban areas which may require additional security measures such as barbed wire.
Comply with our Temporary Works policy for all boundary protection.
Position fencing away from street furniture and trees to prevent climbing or increase the height if necessary.
Design boundary lines to avoid creating narrow, unlit pathways, and eliminate recessed areas.
Control site access with recorded arrivals and departures; automated access control systems are recommended.
Secure all gates, ensuring they are part of the fencing/hoarding, and keep them closed when not in use.
Lock gates securely when the site is closed, using padlocks positioned to prevent slack in chains.
Prevent gates from being lifted from hinges or used as climbing aids; ensure no cross-sections aid climbing.
Provide separate entrances for vehicles and pedestrians, ideally adjacent to each other, with effective segregation to protect pedestrians.
Display infographic signs around the perimeter warning of unauthorised entry dangers.
Implement barriers, enclosures, or covers to protect against falls into excavations, manholes, or open edges.
Securely store hazardous substances, vehicles, machinery, and tools out of sight when the site is closed.
Remove ignition keys from vehicles and plant when not in use and activate immobilisers. Consider installing fuel tank alarms.
Provide a secure perimeter around high-value fixed machinery, like tower cranes, with anti-climb protection.
Install automated lighting in key areas, avoiding light pollution.
Use ample CCTV systems of recognition quality with active monitoring and verbal intervention capabilities; display visible signage for recording notifications.
Ensure safe access and well-lit routes for security personnel, avoiding shadowed hazardous areas.
Provide clear information on site changes and implement a lone-working procedure for emergency situations.
