Waste

Designated areas must be established for segregating, reusing, and ultimate disposal of waste materials, these should be clearly signed for each waste stream and be safely accessible for pedestrians to deposit waste.

Recycling facilities must be provided to segregate office and canteen wastes, including paper, cans, and plastics.

Projects in Wales must be registered for hazardous waste with the NRW.

Waste management permits, licenses, or exemptions must be in place for any onsite waste processing activities, such as crushing and soil treatment.

The WRAP quality protocol must be followed for the production of aggregates from waste.

The CL:AIRE Code of Practice must be adhered to for the treatment and use of contaminated soils, including the appointment of a qualified person and the development of a materials management plan (MMP)

Hazardous wastes (e.g., oil, fuel, paints) must be collected and stored separately from general wastes.

The burning of rubbish onsite is prohibited unless a permit or license has been obtained.
Only registered waste carriers must be used to remove waste from the site, and regular checks must be conducted to ensure compliance.

Waste must be disposed of at licensed sites appropriate for the type of waste being disposed of.
Road sweeper waste must be disposed of at authorised sites. Whenever possible, sweepers should travel to a licensed site for unloading.

Avoid emptying sweepers into or near drains, surface water, or groundwater to prevent pollution, and do not empty waste directly onto bare ground.

The arisings compartment of the sweeper should be washed out only in areas with controlled drainage, like a public sewer or containment unit.

With the right licence or permit, sweeper waste can be emptied onto an impermeable surface with controlled drainage.

To deposit waste on land, a licence or permit is required.

Waste transfer documents must include all required information, including six digit waste codes, the license number of the carrier, tip location, and a declaration regarding the waste hierarchy.

Waste transfer documents must be retained for the appropriate durations: two years for non-hazardous waste and three years for hazardous waste.
